Two styles of acupuncture are most commonly on offer in this country – traditional and western (medical acupuncture).
Traditional Acupuncture, as practised by members of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) - the main UK regulatory body for the practice of acupuncture - is an holistic approach to health - based on more than 2,000 years of development and refinement in the Far East. The tradition is as much about the maintenance of overall health and well-being as the management and treatment of isolated symptoms. The BacC web site is: www.acupuncture.org.uk
Western or medical acupuncture is a more recent development, practised predominantly by doctors and physiotherapists, using a limited range of acupuncture techniques on the basis of a western medical diagnosis.
